Amrita’s Kitchen

Compassion in a warm meal
Amma stresses the importance of devoting some of our time to serve the poor and needy. Since 2003, the Nairobi Satsang has been serving free meals to children. It has proved to be an enriching and heartwarming experience for those involved.

With Amma’s love and support an Amma’s kitchen opened in Nairobi in 2003 and has become very popular, and Bella, the co ordinator, who has served food to the children for 5 years, believes it's going to become even more popular as the word gets around.  Initially the second and fourth Sundays of  each month, about 65 children lined up to get delicious vegetarian food at the Kabete Children’s Home. 80 New steel plates, bowls, spoons and glasses were donated to Kabete Children’s Home by the devotees of Amrita Centre Kenya in July 2007.  For 2008, we have a new venue, a school in slums of Kawangware called Faith Umbrella Children’s home where we feed 100 children.  Everyone is welcome to help in this weekly service where we serve a wholesome and nutritious vegetarian meal.

"They have commented on how good the food tastes. Actually, we're not just feeding them food, we're feeding them love and kindness, which is exactly what Amma does."

Many children and teens in Nairobi help with Amma’s Kitchen, and they have deep feelings about what they are doing. "I felt so uplifted that I was doing something to help," said 15-year-old Karishma, Bella’s daughter and a student at Aga Khan Academy. "Instead of complaining that our government is not listening to what we say, we can do something about it. We can help our fellow humans."

"Feed those who are hungry, help the destitute, console those who are sad, give relief to those in pain, be charitable towards everyone. This is Mother’s message to you. Real devotion to God is to be compassionate towards the poor and the suffering." ~ Amma
